rec room

make it work

This required meetings about game lore, script revision discussions, goals for the video, and intensive production planning to ensure for a smooth shoot - especially with a deadline looming.

storyboards were key to our success, as we could establish and save camera set-ups before the shoot-day, since it was a virtual shoot.

showdown

The first of three cinematic short films, Showdown tested the new production workflow and delivered immediately. The premiere generated an 800% increase in viewership over their previous trailer launch.

The environment was built from an in-game map, but we treated it like a real production: re-lighting the entire space to match the dramatic tone of the story and pushing the assets through multiple rounds of character animation, text effects and pacing until it felt cinematic.

We finished just in time to screen it live at Rec Room's all-hands retreat in Seattle, where over 150 employees from around the world saw it for the first time together.

behind-the-screams

Directing avatars in a virtual world is a strange and genuinely fun experience.

Blocking characters, calling action, adjusting performances…all while remote in the comfort of our individual homes. It’s an incredible feeling.

invasion

Invasion was a different challenge entirely. I wrote, storyboarded and directed a fully CGI film, working remotely with a VFX team in South America.

Besides the cinematic trailers, one of the first tasks was to create an in-game video to promote rec room’s newest mechanic: custom t-shirts for their avatars.

Rec Room needed a live-action director to create films inside their virtual game world- utilizing their virtual camera, avatars and custom game maps.

My first task was to sit down with the in-house media team and reimagine how rec room approaches video production, from pre-production to post.

getting started

The Rec Room media team provided vital support on virtual camera operation,
storyboard refinement, character creation, VFX and lore consulting.

make it to midnight

Make it to Midnight was a collaborative production with the Rec Room team. I directed the reveal trailer, working with the team on story structure, pacing and tone to introduce the game's world to players for the first time.
